Do I need additional insurance when renting a car?
You're renting a car? Do you need to buy the extra coverage?
The answer is....you don't have to. As long as you have liability, comprehensive, and collision insurance on your personal auto policy, your coverage extends to rentals. Please note: Some limitations might apply to non-US territories, but these are outlined in your policy. Double-check before you rent a vehicle in another country.
Here are a few reasons why you SHOULD still consider buying the extra coverage offered by the rental car company:
If you get into an accident with the rental car, a claim would be filed on the extra coverage purchased and not your personal auto policy.
You may not be exposed to loss of use—this is a fee the rental company can charge you since they can't rent their damaged vehicle during the repair or replacement.
The rental company's coverage has little to no deductible.
