Need to file a home claim? Follow these steps.

Damage to your home or a theft can be scary.

Here's what you do if you need to file a home insurance claim.

We typically see claims for damages caused by:

  • Water
  • Wind
  • Hail
  • Trees
  • Dog Bites
  • Liability Lawsuits

  1. The first step is to stop any further damage.
  2. Turn off your water at the main supply or tarp any openings.
  3. Call emergency services if needed and reach out to a mitigation company if there are major water leaks that need fast cleanup to reduce the likelihood of mold or further damage.

  4. Document the incident with pictures and videos

  5. Obtain your insurance policy to reference coverages during the claims process. ***Keep in mind, if your claim is potentially less than your deductible or if you're unsure if it's a covered loss, call your insurance agent. We'll help you out.

  6. Call your insurance carrier to start the claims process.
  7. One of their claims representatives will be assigned to your case. They'll walk you through their process and set expectations. Ask for as much clarity as you need here, as this process can cause frustration due to misunderstanding.

  8. The last step is to approve estimates.
  9. Once you receive the initial check from your insurance company, repairs can start on your home.
  10. Once the repairs are complete, the remainder of the claim will be paid out.
