I’ve been in an accident; how do I get a rental car?

You've been in an accident and need a rental car.

Here's what to do:

  • Work with the at-fault insurance carrier to secure a rental car.
  • If they don't provide one as soon as you need it and you have to secure a rental car on your own, keep your receipts for reimbursement.

  • We recommend confirming any coverage limitations with the claim representative. (***Keep in mind, they'll only cover a rental vehicle that's similar to yours. So choose a vehicle like the one you normally drive.)

  • If the claim is covered by your insurance carrier, check your policy to see if you have a rental car reimbursement and to check your limits. If you have rental car reimbursement, you can secure a rental car by working with your insurance carrier or by keeping your receipts and submitting them for reimbursement.

Here's what's NOT covered by your insurance carrier:

  • Rental car reimbursement without a claim through a covered loss like a comprehensive, a collision, an uninsured or underinsured claim—you can't file a rental car reimbursement claim.

  • Rental car reimbursement for maintenance issues also won't be provided.
  • Example: So let's say your vehicle's transmission is out and it takes two weeks to get it repaired—this is a maintenance issue, so rental car reimbursement doesn't apply. This isn't considered a covered loss.
