Greenville Small Business Highlight: El Matador

I met David Stockwell, owner of local Mexican restaurant El Matador, many years ago because my in-laws have been eating at his restaurant for years.

Dining at El Matador has become a bit of a family tradition. Not only is El Matador delicious, but it is the type of local, family-owned and operated business that help create a bustling economy in Greenville.

I am happy to introduce this month’s local business highlight—El Matador.

About El Matador

El Matador has been family owned and operated since it first opened its door in 1968. In fact, it was the first Mexican restaurant to open in South Carolina! Currently run by David Stockwell, who took over the restaurant from his father, El Matador’s long lasting service is just a testament to the outstanding meals and customer service they provide to everyone who walks through their doors.

Tucked away in a quaint woodsy rock house in Taylors on Wade Hampton Boulevard, El Matador prides themselves on serving only the freshest foods. They make everything fresh daily, including grinding their meat to serve and using local produce as often as possible. The fresh food, combined with a comfortable atmosphere keeps customers coming back year-after-year; three generations can often be found eating at the same table!

David took the restaurant over from his parents years ago and hopes to some day pass the business on to his daughter, who is currently four-years-old.

What to Try at El Matador

David suggests everyone who comes to El Matador for the first time gives the chile relleno a try, it’s his favorite item on the menu and the favorite of many of his repeat customers. According to David, their food “isn’t like the cookie cutter Mexican food that can be found at other restaurants, everything we make has a twist that makes it unlike anywhere else.”

Keeping Greenville Alive

My family is happy to support David and El Matador because it is businesses like his that make Greenville tick and help keep the local economy alive. Friendly service, familiar faces and guaranteed fresh delicious food—who wouldn’t want to support that?
