Safe Harbor Resale Shop
Advisors Insurance Agency Small Business Highlight
This month I have had the pleasure of learning more about Safe Harbor Resale Shop, thanks to the manager Katie Rockwell. Even if you are already familiar with Safe Harbor Resale Shop, you may learn a few new things!

Background

Safe Harbor provides services for victims of domestic violence and their children. The Safe Harbor Resale Shop is a nonprofit and not just your typical resale/thrift ship. 90% of each purchase goes directly towards the Safe Harbor programs and their clients, allowing them to continue to thrive here in the upstate. Clients receiving services from Safe Harbor shop in the store for free. The Safe Harbor Resale Shop has something for everyone! They have kids clothes, women’s clothes, men’s clothes, shoes, accessories, home décor, dishes, linens, and furniture!
Katie moved to Greenville from Maine in 2003 and she loves SC! She felt there was a need for resale here. The idea of wearing someone else’s clothes may seem strange to some, until they come to the shop and look around. She hears women everyday say things like, “I can’t believe I bought an authentic COACH purse for less than $100!” Katie strongly feels there’s a need for places like Safe Harbor Resale Shop where people can buy something really nice for a fraction of the cost. In addition, you know that your money is going back to something that’s making a difference in our community.

The Process

Many incredible people donate to Safe Harbor Resale shop. Katie and her staff process the clothes at the shop and get them prepped for sale. They tirelessly go through each bag making sure the clothing is free of stains or rips. They want to offer the best for their clients and their shoppers. She, her staff, and volunteers work hard to keep the shop organized and clean. They strive to create an environment that is easy to shop so you can find what you are seeking.

Clothing that is received but can’t be sold is recycled. Safe Harbor Resale Shop is paid for the recycled clothing based on weight. The money they receive for this goes back to supporting the mission and vision of Safe Harbor! Keep this in mind the next time you think about throwing away old shoes, belts, and purses!
Often people request that their items go directly to the shelters. There are several reasons why this request cannot be honored. Safe Harbor clients are able to come to the shop and take the things that fit them. This also means they pick out clothes that are in season AND fit their style! Keeping donations at the shop to be processed is a great way to prevent overloading the shelters. They want to ensure the shelters have room for women and children who need a safe place to stay.

If you want to donate items directly to the shelters, you can find a wish list on the Safe Harbor website. You can drop those items at the Safe Harbor Resale Shop and know that they will be delivered to the shelters and their clients.

Goals

In the coming years, Katie plans to continue to break the mold for resale shops in SC! She hopes to raise more awareness about domestic violence and how Safe Harbor can help. She also hopes to show how shopping in the store matters and most importantly, how it makes a difference in the lives of people around us.

These days there is so much that’s taken to our local junk yards and polluting our planet. So, next time you clean out your closet, before you throw it all away, consider donating your items to the Safe Harbor Resale Shop. Why not let your items be resold and help your local community at the same time!

There are several events each year in the Upstate that benefit Safe Harbor. Here is an image from Fashion with a Passion-their biggest event of the year-where models wear clothing from the shop!
