You Just Hit Bambi! Does Your Auto Have Comprehensive Coverage?

Picture this…

You and your family are driving home from a nice gathering with your loved ones, and as Bambi and his cousins are deer in headlightsplaying in the forest, they see lights and decide to look into the odd moving objects passing by. They go towards you and your family and add a hop or two in their gait and BAM!

You’re stopped in the middle of the road with a rack through your windshield or at the best a smashed in bumper. You are frustrated, your car is instantly compacted and your kids are crying because in their minds, you just hit a beloved Disney character!

Is this covered in your auto insurance?

In our part of the state this situation happens a lot, and let me help you relax…your car is covered if you have comprehensive coverage…you may see it listed on your policy as ‘Other than Collision” It usually comes together with another coverage called collision coverage.

What is Collision and Comprehensive coverage?

Collision Coverage: This is applied when your vehicle comes in contact with another vehicle or another object. Additionally it involves the upset or overturn of your vehicle.

Comprehensive Coverage: This is also known as other than collision coverage, this coverage involves damage to an auto by means of: fire, vandalism, theft, natural disasters…and Bambi…or in other words accidents with all of the animals that you strike with your vehicle or that strike you.

Do I have to have Collision and Comprehensive Coverage?

Collision and comprehensive coverage is optional, but it may be required if you have loan on a vehicle or are leasing a vehicle. Some call it “Full coverage”

So in the event that you are in an accident with one of the animals of the kingdom, the comprehensive coverage would be utilized. The amount paid for the repair or replacement of the damaged vehicle will factor in the actual cash value – your selected deductible.

Example

Let’s say it cost $3,500 to repair the front end of your car and you have a $500 deductible then you will only be responsible for paying $500.00 towards the repairs . . . depending on the situation you might not turn that in.
