How to Save Money on my Energy Bill This Winter

Winter is an expensive time of the year. Cold weather requires warmer clothes and warmer homes. Plus, winter weather can wreak havoc on your home. So how do you keep up with the cost of living in the winter time?

While you can’t control the cost of everything, there are a few things to do with your home in the fall, before winter weather hits, that can help lower your energy bill each month.

Here are 5 tips to lower your energy bill this winter:

#1: Tune up your heating system
For a small fee, hire a technician to come out and inspect your furnace to ensure the system is clean and in good condition. This will allow your heating system to operate at full efficiency. The inspection should also measure carbon-monoxide leakage.
#2: Turn on your ceiling fan
No, we aren’t crazy. Turn on your ceiling fan – but turn it in reverse (if it has that option) running the fans blade in a clockwise direction. This will help push warm air down, which is especially helpful in home with high ceilings.
#3: Caulk around windows and doors
Check all the panels around your windows and doors for potential gaps. Gaps can leak in cold air and water and let out warm air. Try buying silicon caulk for exterior use – it won’t shrink and it is strong enough to withstand the elements.
#4: Clean your chimney
Before you throw a log on the fire, hire a chimney sweep to come and clean out your fireplace. A clean chimney prevents chimney fires and also prevents carom monoxide from sneaking into the home.
#5: Check out the roof
Take a look at your roof to ensure it is in good shape. Look for any missing or loose shingles. Ice, rain and snow can cause major damage to a roof, which is why it is important to deal with repairs in the fall rather than during a snowstorm. A hole in the roof will also let out warm air, wasting the money you spent trying to heat your home.

With the right preparations, winter doesn’t have to be the most expensive time of the year. A few simple tasks can help lower your energy bill and protect your home.
